CRIMES AGAINST ANIMALS around the world

I would like to start this predictably very long blog with the short one posted by Shannon Wright a few days ago titled

[Racism in the Animal Rights Movement]

by Shannon Wright

Once again, this morning, I woke up to the words “There’s Chinese bashing going on again.” That meant there was a post on Facebook that sent people reeling. I have to say that I am, to be blunt, sick and fucking tired of the racism in the animal rights movement. Why do some people feel the need to hate an entire country for the awful abuses and barbarism that only some of it’s residents commit? Unfortunately, this is not limited to the Chinese people; but I have to say, without a doubt, I hear more Chinese bashing than the bashing of any other race, including the Japanese. Here are some of the comments:

“THE EVIL OF THE CHINESE!!! BOYCOTT CHINA FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS–SHARE FAR & WIDE. THX”

“This is sick but then its china what do you expect assholes”

“exactly h pls share”

“sick asshole and SO PERVERSE AND EVIL!”

“GET OVER IT, LETS STAND FOR THE ANIMALS NOT THE CHINESE, OMG WHO DO YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT N??????

“I CARE ABOUT THE INNOCENT ANIMALS IN CHINA WHERE THERE ARE NO FRICKING ANIMAL RIGHTS WHATSOEVER!”

“I HATE THE CHINESE PEOPLE!!!”

“THE CHINESE IS AN EVIL RACE.” (In a thread on my wall March 7, 2012)

Before opinions, let’s first look at the facts. Here are some examples of the wonderful activism taking place in China as we speak:

Chinese activists rescuing dogs from dog truck.

http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/04/19/chinese-animal-activists-save-hundreds-of-dogs-from-being-eaten/?hpt=C2

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/feb/15/chinese-worry-new-year-magic-act-is-cruel-to-fish/

http://www.wildaid.org/news/yao-ming-calls-shark-fin-ban-china

http://english.savechinastigers.org/node/211

And, of course we can’t leave out Anthony Marr who led the highest-profile anti-hunting campaign in Canada, has conducted campaigns in Canadian and American Chinatowns to put an end to endangered species medicines and in India to help save the tigers where they live, has traveled the U.S. on seven long CARE (Compassion for Animals Road Expedition) tours just to name a few.

http://www.homosapienssaveyourearth.blogspot.com/

I completely understand the hatred. I hate hunters. I hate vivisectors. I hate furriers. I hate those who maime, torture, and kill. But I have transformed that hatred into action. I’m pro-active and I get out there and fight with a level head. As ARAs we should be fighting against racism; along with speciesism, ageism, sexism, and any other “ism” that keeps humans and non-humans oppressed. How can we fight against any of these when hatred is so prevalent in our own movement? How can we fight speciesism when racism runs rampant in AR?

This kind of behavior in the movement is unbecoming to say the least, and it ruins our reputation. The enemy can and will use us against ourselves. Then we will have a snowball’s chance in Hell of winning this fight.

Shannon Wright
November 12, 2011

Due to what Shannon has so courageously brought out, I have compiled the following list of abusive activities pertaining to various peoples, cultures and countries, so that we could view the situation from a global, objective, unbiased and balanced perspective.

Given the virtually endless varieties of animal abuse we humans have had the evil genius of inventing, I have limited the following list to those practised by at least 1% of the population of the country in question, and supported by at least 2%, which therefore precludes such highly localized atrocities as tearing live turtles’ heads off with the contestants’ bare hands in the Snapper Festival in Ohio County, Indiana, USA.

The list, as is, would be incomplete, and may contain errors. If you have any atrocities to include that is practised by at least 1% and supported by at least 2% of the population of the country in question, or if you have any country/ies to add to or remove from any listed activity, please comment, and I will amend the list accordingly. Thank you.

Anthony Marr

This blog was written over the period of four days, during which time I reviewed thousands of animal abuse pictures to select the following few dozen. It has been a hellish experience – definitely not recommended entertainment. But since I have done the agonizing, I humbly request that you look through the pictures that I have selected. They all have their rightful places in AR.

This reminded me of a brief exchange with my FB friend HyEna Howln this afternoon. She commented on the hunting video trailer I posted yesterday (which is also presented in this blog under Hunting Videos below), and said that she was paralysed with rage. She asked me how I handled my anger upon seeing these atrocities done unto other species on a daily basis for years. My answer was very similar to Shannon’s:

I transform my feelings into action. Action is the best healing force for me, and the only cure for the problem.

And so, I humbly ask, please take these pictures to heart, feel the fury, then transform it to dynamic action.

To see the pictures and charts and maps best, please click on them for their full size versions.

“Enjoy!”

December 13, 2011:

THE “SUBSPECIESIST”

Somewhat belatedly, though never too late, I came across what entertainer Steven Patrick Morrissey said about the Chinese people being a “SUBSPECIES” (Sep 4, 2010). At issue was animal circuses. Perhaps I was too busy on the road conducting my 7th Compassion for Animals Road Expedition (CARE-7 tour – 40 states in 7 months, Apr-Nov, 2010). Now, upon reading it, the first thought that sprang to mind is: Does he think that he belongs to the Master Race? What does this make him? A “Subspeciesist”?

Good thing that facts speak for themselves. In January this year, China beat Morrissey’s UK, and the US, and Canada, in banning animal circuses. Even so, inevitably, when I shared the positive news in a Facebook post, it quickly degenerated into yet another negative Chinese-bashing thread.

As a Chinese Canadian ARA, I’ve taken this type of abuse on a daily basis – from fellow ARAs of all people – for years – though admittedly none was meant to be offensive against my person. At first, I remained silent, thinking that racism would not be tolerated in the movement espousing Anti-Speciesism, which hopefully would be cleansed by those who could see comparable ugliness in their own cultural mirrors, e.g. bow hunting, factory farms, rodeo, vivisection…, and animal circuses, because I considered the subject beneath my dignity and irrelevant to my pro-animal activism. But one day, upon witnessing my own mother being insulted due to her ethnicity, I began writing about it (e.g. my latest blog on this subject: [CRIMES AGAINST ANIMALS Around The World] – http://homosapienssaveyourearth.blogspot.com/2011/11/crimes-against-animals-around-world.html).

Now, in late 2011, reading Morrissey’s statement, and others’ comments in his support, and seeing anti-Chinese groups spring up like wildfire within the AR movement, I have come to a point of resignation. Morrissey and his fans can own the racist sector of the AR movement for all I care. Thankfully, there are groups exemplified by Stand By Animals In China, Stop Crush and the Global Anti-Hunting Coalition that hold steadfastly against racism of any kind within the Animal Rights movement, thus maintaining it on an even keel in the winds of prejudice and bigotry.

Though I understand where his offensive statement had come from – his gut and not his head – I feel that Morrissey owes my mother a big apology, and my father, my sister, my brother, my uncles and aunts and cousins, my childhood friends, NONE OF WHOM eat cats and dogs, or use rhino horn, or skin animals alive, and the vast majority of the Chinese people who are as irked by these atrocities as he is. As for me, I don’t need his apology. He can save his breath for a new song of true compassion, one embracing all sentient beings – including the Chinese people, at least the hundreds of millions of them that abhor cruelty as he does.

24 thoughts on “CRIMES AGAINST ANIMALS around the world

  1. Sadly, all so true, Anthony. Very well complied…it must have been heartbreaking to look at all the photos as you selected those needed for the blog. Every country in the world has some form of animal abuse and cannot point the finger at any other in condemnation. I applaud those individuals and groups out rescuing, educating, protesting, especially in China where free speech is widely oppressed. These courageous activists are putting their very freedom on the line to raise awareness for the animals. I would also add torture and killing of street dogs in Romania and Greece as well as several other countries and the mass murder of greyhounds used and abused for racing in the USA. It is beyond comprehension what humans do to animals in every country in the world.

  2. Dearest Anthony: What you have done must have been so hard but so needed. You have shown the world that every country has cruel people that have no respect for the beautiful creatures this planet is blessed to have, but at the same time every country has people trying to save and love the blessed animals given to us to enjoy and love. As always, I am proud of you, but I must say this is one of your greatest accomplishments. Your friend forever, Sharyn

  3. Dear Anthony, I am part of a group of dedicated animal and wildlife activists in South Africa, especially saving Rhino, which face imminent extinction in their entirety. I commend your work here, and in all your other endeavours – giving voice to the voiceless. We, as homo sapiens are indeed privileged above all creatures great and small. We have been bestowed the choice to procreate or not. These animals have not. They follow their instincts, and give birth to young, who from birth may well have had their death warrants already signed. Homo sapiens also has the choice of suicide. The immense and indescribable suffering of animals at the hands of human violence and cruelty defies description. Even worse, these poor creatures do not even have the ability to take their own lives. Thank you for this incredible research work, which will become a source of reference and awareness in my work daily. May God bless you and keep you safe and warm, always. Marianne, South Africa

  4. Anthony, thank you so much for this blog. Myself and my friend have been trying hard to bring the Facebook group that we admin, 'Stand By Animals In China', back from the brink of the disgusting cesspit of racist and hate speech that it started out as. We now have wonderful members who follow and share the links that we post about Chinese activists saving animals and protesting in China and we also have Chinese activists in the group who post things happening now in China-some from the media but some small articles like a fireman saving a kitten that we wouldn't otherwise see in the West. Every country has it's own form of animal abuse and this is what we have told and keep telling the members. We have posted this blog onto the group and with you being a Chinese activist, the impact will be stronger. Thanks for everything you do for the animals and our planet.

  5. Tina Young Well mister or mrs whoever you are, I'm telling you here and now that the Slanty eyed are evil bastards and I for one, detest the evil race and not afraid to say so. In your blog, you show a few pitiful examples of ppl saving animals. Who …do you think your fooling. The evil practice that's performed by these retards on a daily basis far outweighs the niceties that you have not so cleverly hand picked. They skin animals alive. They boil animals alive. They ram hoses down the throats of animals. The garrote animals. Etc etc They do this In the public eye and in front of their children, bringing them up in the same evil shadow as themselves. They are blatantly open about the annual dog meat festival that they celebrate. I could go on and on but I'm not going to waste much more time on your inane blog. However, I state here and now that I shall continue to campaign and let the people know the truth about the slanty eyed pigs and Educate them into the evil practices listed above. You, either have your head in the clouds or you are blind. Get real, come into the real world. I'm not like most people who hide behind a blanket of cowardice. No, I tell it like it is and I'm telling you that they are without a doubt the evilest nation known to man. See More6 hours ago via mobile · LikeUnlike · 1Loading….

  6. I hate to say this, but you can add Canada to the list of countries participating in wolf slaughtering. In an effort to save our woodland caribou in BC and Alberta, the Ministry of Natural Resources will be slaughtering tens of thousands of wolves, a heinous and barbaric act. Thank you Anthony for your hard work and dedication. I have been so sad and frustrated for many years now, and not a day goes by that I don't think about what humans are doing to this planet and its living creatures. Every day I work to campaign and raise awareness about all of these atrocities – in our community, country, and around the world.

  7. To this Tina Young, if that's really your name. You can not possibly be an animal rights activist due to your poor choice in words of insulting pigs. At least I sincerely hope you're not an ARA. Why have you not seen the other atrocities listed in this blog? And really, what makes you think you're better than anybody else? You don't think factory farm employees cut off limbs and take the skin off of conscious animals? I highly suspect you decided to do some bashing on this blog (and by the looks of it, on FB)because Anthony is Chinese. Grow up!

  8. Tina,or whatever your real name is-what a load of drivel! If you had actually read the blog properly then you would know that you should be addressing a mister and that the mister you should have been addressing is Chinese and has done more ARA work than you have probably read about. How very short sighted of you-if you knew anything about ARA, you would know for a start that everything you listed as being exclusive to the race so you disgustingly slated, also happens every day in every country of the world. You are so self righteous that you already know this though don't you?Well, you should if like Shannon said, you are indeed an ARA-which I also very much doubt with the drivel that you just spouted! Actually, let me spell it out, ARA stands for Animal Rights Activist-there you go, another label under your belt!Any self respecting ARA knows that atrocities go on around the world and that they also 'skin animals alive. They boil animals alive. They ram hoses down the throats of animals. The garrote animals. Etc etc'-your words not mine. Do some research before spouting incorrect info too-the dog meat festival that you say they are blatantly open about was cancelled this year-by CHINESE ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS. That's right-they have them in China too!!And the few 'pitiful examples' of people saving lives are a drop in the ocean. If you knew anything about China you would know the ARAs do most of their work on their own social networking sites and they have thousands of members. I 'know' someone very similar to you on facebook. This 'person'and her cronies also vilify the whole of China for the negative-and more often than not-the wrongly labelled item or country that their articles depict. Rather than trying to find out the truth of what is happening they hide behind the old chestnut ''I'm not like others, I say what I think'. In your own words 'Tina'-You, either have your head in the clouds or you are blind. Get real, come into the real world. But then again maybe don't-the REAL ARAs in this world don't tolerate disgusting racist no-marks like you.

  9. From Daisy Won: "Handy bird's eye view of animal abuses from around the world. A separate task on its own, shining light on the darker side of AR – in addition to all you do for the animals! For all your prolific contributions, if AR had a historical record, you would be in it. Thank you A. Marr!"

  10. Anthony, I too am disgusted with the racist spoutings of cretins who have nothing better to do that inflame hatred on the internet… I have no time for them but try to chastise them when possible.I am also very impressed with your blog. Have you by any chance seen mine, a similar one? Here's the link: http://journeyman47.wordpress.com/2009/09/13/human-crimes-against-animals/Originally it was posted like yours is here on Blogspot, but I found a better hosting site with WordPress, which I like better.Perhaps it can give you some ideas for yours; I know I've got to update mine, and I'm already inspired by yours! Thanks, bro- Dave Bernazani, Lafayette, CA

  11. Thank you for all your hard work. Anthony you are correct we cannot be driven by anger but by performance. If animals are no longer killed how do we feed all our dogs, cats and other pets? I am just learning about all this horrible cruelty and yet what happens if it all stops?

  12. I cant belive, how sick and awful humas can be to animal 😥 Im very happy, that all ones of humas are not kind of like that people, how hurt animals, just fot `fun`

  13. Awful to read all this and it indeed is a shame that we are called 'humans'. My heart pained when i saw how the piglets were feeding on their mom 😦 At that specific picture I saw me breastfeeding my daughter 😦 Thank you for this wonderful post.

  14. Thank you for compiling these pictures and statistics. I hope that increased awareness of these horrors will motivate meat eaters and fur/leather wearers to consider making the market for products of torture extinct!

  15. First off thank you very much for all you do.I do have tears streaming down my cheeks after reading these comments, the horrors these pictures show, the pain it gives me…the racism that still exist…no one country is pure, all are guilty in one form or another.no one race is better then another…i became a vegetarian 3 yrs ago,now learning to become a vegan, when i learned the atrocity my eating meat created,i didn't know.I was raised in a village of farmers.our animals were not mistreated ,we used everything we killed.i was a child, never knowing what the meat and dairy industries did until 3 yrs ago.I am ashamed i didn't found out sooner.Nevertheless going forward now i know and will continue to educate people and continue to stand up against all animal cruelty.i became a volunteer in animal rescue 3 yrs ago here in NY.i do what i can in my community and will continue to do all i can.I can only imagine the pain you feel daily upon what you witness, documenting all these atrocities so that you can educate and help to stop it all.i know you do it for the animals and not to get praised but i bow to you and thank you for the animals.on a side not i am so very sorry your family and you are the subject or racism. It is sad as the person who wrote ,Tina?,should not feel so proud of herself.i pity her having so much hate in her heart, she sound American/Canadian,she should look into the animal cruelty her own country is responsible for ex;wolf killing in Alaska, the baby seal slaughter to name a few.White people are just as guilty. These two north American country inflicts so much pain for animals.Shame on her for speaking this way.I sure hope she does at least do her part in trying to save animals and not just utilize her time for hate speech.I wish you rewarding success in your goal and i am so proud to know you,a countryman are doing so much to help all animals.thank you.

  16. I have to say im so sorry im guilty of that. This was an incredible read and so honest. Thanks for opening my eyes to my racism, hate, and plain ignorance. I love the animals and want to help all the causes and have been so closed minded how could i make a difference. Time to reovaluate my ways. I will educate myself and fight in more positive ways. Thanks

  17. I am from that little country in the southern hemisphere, of which many people ask "which part of Australia is it in?". I'm usually pissed off that New Zealand is always left out of 'everything' and I see we have been left out of Crimes Against Animals. In this instance, that should be good, except we don't deserve the omission. I won't go into detail, but NZ has a culture of rugby, beer and hunting, which translates into an acceptance that animals are here for our use.Cruelty is everywhere and it is only a matter of law as to how much of it is allowed. Just as kindness has no skin colour or race, neither has cruelty. I have no doubt the veneer of social harmony hides many monsters, whichever part of the planet we inhabit. A few years ago I met someone from WSPA who was en route home to the UK from a fact-finding mission on farming methods in S.America and China. At her meetings, in both countries, she experienced people expressing emotion as they met other like-minded people. They had felt so lonely in their compassion for animals and they had no idea that there were others around them who felt the same. This is this sort of person who is now rescuing animals in China, the country that has emerged from its self-imposed isolation. These AR groups need support and encouragement, not racist rants such as this comment on Our Compass: "Vile vile people and we except them into our country with their Chinese restaurant’s you don’t know what you are eating." It would be funny, if it wasn't so offensive. The comment refers to a change org petition "Dogs Baked Alive, Ban This Now" http://our-compass.org/2012/02/26/dogs-baked-alive-for-dinner-two-petitions-other-boycott-activities/Several of us think the petition is erroneous and we would like some back-up… anyone? Incidentally, it was the above page on Our Compass that brought me here, via a link from "lewistan234a". Thank you for this Anthony, I will forward your website link to all my friends.

  18. Thank you for the fantastic post. Since I had myspace I have written about the hatred of China, China does many of their killing out in the open and many of the Animal "rights" people are just dogs and cats "lovers" so they see these dogs and cats being tortured out in the open for food. It's a horrible thing to look at but the only difference between America and China is that America which I will use for an example for now do their torture behind closed doors or with lots of euphemism, whitewash and lies. If you took vivisection, fur farms where animals are anally electricuted, the slaughter house (omg) and sports hunting plus many many more we would make China look tame. We slaughter over 10 billion animals for food and the billion more for "sports". Let's get the vivisection being done out in the open where plenty of dogs, cats are being used out in the open. Even here I have written numerous time how sick and tired I am of this hatred towards the Asians especially Chinese. I have mentioned about the good people in China that rescues animals, including you. Personally I believe America are one of the worst when it comes to animals but as you can see there are many great people in America just like in China and even Japan. I have heard, bomb the "Japs" too by Animal "rights" people with many support. It made me sick and been to numerous post of this type and after I say my peace they still go on because they don't want to hear the truth, they are racist that is it, plain and simple. BTW last I heard Morrissey's wife is not a vegan and eats animals, take all those slaughterhouse animals out in the open eh, and see how it will look out in the street covered in blood and the sounds of the animal cry. I have several post here but will take me forever to find it about article very similar to what Anthony and Shannon wrote. I am surprised this has come to the surface now when I been saying this forever. Anthony Marr is one of the greatest Activist, if not for his article about a deer http://www.all-creatures.org/hope/deer-20070219.htm I would never have fought for wildlife. I started out with slaughterhouse animals but never really knew about how barbaric sports hunting was till I read more from Anthony Marr. Overall SpeciesismRacismSexism (which peta is)They are all related. White man used to rule over blacks and women saying that "according to the bible they are soulless" now they do it to the animals. In animal rights we should all work together and stop being racist, racism I heard enough from the right wing side and hunters. That is what they all sound like.

  19. I agree with you, Anthony! I have a animal advocacy community FB page. I often post items relating to animal rescue efforts in China. I do this to emphasize the point that not all Chinese (or, "Asians," for that matter) should be perceived as animal abusers. In fact, I believe animal rights activists in China are much more heroic than those in other countries, like the U.S. Not only are these activists up against the big government, but they must fight deeply entrenched culture. That is a difficult feat, indeed! In addition, there are other countries that treat their animals horribly, including the U.S. It's a worldwide phenomenon – sadly.

  20. It is horrible to see animals beeing treated so badly.Thank you for all the effort you put into makeing the world relise what they are doing
