The only legitimate use of rhino horn

Rhinos are under intense pressure on 3 fronts:

………. “MY HORN IS NOT MEDICINE!”

1. Rhino-horn use in tradition Chinese medicine – being phased out.

2. Poaching – on the rise.

3. Trophy Hunting – as part of Big-5-Hunting (elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo), legal in 6 African countries, especially South Africa. Of these, rhinos fetch the most money – up to $300,000 per hunt. Hunters claim that it is conservation funding for the host countries, but only $1000-$2000 go to the host countries as license fees, the rest go to the hunting guide-outfitters. Both the hunters and the outfitters are by and large American.

…………. With bow-and-arrow yet.

…………. Is this all it’s for?

  1. I pray one day for the East to stop the demand for this animal's horn for man's greed and arrogance and nothing more… so sad is the photo of the baby rhino still snuggling up to the dead carcase of it's mother… no demand means no need to kill these ancient animals… when will the murders end?!??!!!

  2. Thank you for the comment, Roz. What you wrote is true. There is, however, also trophy hunting, and hunting the "Big-5" (elephant, lion, rhino, leopard and buffalo) is still legal in 6 African countries, and the hunters and guide-outfitters are mostly American (e.g. Safari Club Int'l).

  3. Poaching mostly happens because there is a lucrative market for the horn and it is an easy way for locals to earn more in one day than they could in years of legitimate work, still horrific. These trophy hunters make me ashamed to be human. What could possibly motivate an individual to feel pride in killing these beautiful animals. I am sorry but it makes me so angry I would like to take their high powered rifles and chase them around for a day.I hope Karma comes around and kicks their miserable arses.
